Sir, you have piqued my interest ;) Re: New South: well I picked up on the civil war references with "stone mountain" and the "once-great old horsemen" (Confederate memorial I presume?) - what I took away from it was ambivalence about the causes and legacy of that war (love the line ending "100% cotton for sure") and maybe a desire to escape that by finding a new south in the wide open west. Also made me think about Southern Unionists.
yes, georgia history is quite interesting. with “new south” i was trying to say something about slavery in the south, how it is like some memory we are repressing yet we have memorials to it, like the stone mountain bas relief. you’re right about looking for a new “new south” in the west, but the west being more a symbol for new beginnings, the mississippi acting as the river styx which when submerged in it, your memory erases. i’m glad you liked it, i was trying something different, i normally don’t write about this kind of stuff.
