something i wrote in the library yesterday, not sure why
let me tell you a poem i wrote
called “ode to your kneecaps”
i wrote it on a church bulletin in 1997
when i was too young to sit still -
if you weren’t there i imagined you
all baptist sundress that hung just above
your kneecaps, and they were scarred
with a band-aid imprint - it hearkens back
to basics - boy half-falls in love with
imaginary girl - its a period piece on 1997
with hypermetaphors like you are the hymns
i pretend to sing or you are the water
i am baptised in, then it rambles on
again, always, about your kneecaps
and how i didn’t really see them, then ends
with a Judas Iscariot reference, strictly
for the scholars, quite abruptly - it starts
like this.
———-
for like a month i’ve had the phrase “ode to your kneecaps” popping up in my head
and i’ve tried writing poems with that title and got so fed up and wrote this instead
